I won't touch on the emotional attachments of marriage because that is quite subjective.

The important thing about marriage is the legal bond it creates between two people. If anything unfortunate should happen, the spouse would have legal rights and control of assets. Also in Canada, if someone is injured and needs to ride in an ambulance, only a family member or spouse can ride along with them to the hospital.
