Steven and Wayne’s Awards' Rivalry Will Not Affect Friendship.
Kuala Lumpur Dispatch - Steven Ma, Christine Ng and Wayne Lai came to Malaysia, and displayed the closeness of TVB employees to each other. However, whenever TVB Anniversary Awards ceremony draws close, the tabloids will sure to stir up controversies and rumors about who and who are not getting along, or rivals contending for the awards, so on and so forth. Both Steven Ma and Wayne Lai are nominated for the best actor category for their respective roles in “Steps”. (the top 5 is yet to be announced) But they are buddies, and both asserted that their friendship will not be affected by the award rivalry. Steven asserted his support for Wayne and hoped that the latter will win an award. On Friday, Oct 19, Steven, Wayne and Christine came to Malaysia. After attending the press conference at Kuala Lumpur, they flew on to Ipoh to help promote Astro Hua Li TV Awards 2007 which will be held early next year. Christine brought along her husband. At the promotion, the three of them were lively and playful, and were very humorous and flippant with their answers. Whenever one of them was answering a question, the other two would interrupt with jokes, livening up the whole atmosphere with laughter and lightheartedness. They said that because the Astro TV Awards list is yet to be formally announced, they are not sure if they will participate in next year award ceremony. But they would rally votes for each other.
For the Nov 17th TVB Anniversary Awards, both Steven and Wayne are nominated for their respective roles in Steps. Last year, Steven was awarded the most favorite TV male character for his role in Safe Guards. However, this year, he will support Wayne, and hope the latter will win an award. Steven said: We have cooperated in several shows but he has not been awarded many awards. I will rally votes for him and, anyway, it’s truly about time he gets one.” Wayne, who was standing beside him, was momentarily lost for words, and did not quite know how to respond. Steven teased: “Well, like me, you could have at least said: “I hope Steven would get an award, too.” At hearing that, all three of them spontaneously burst into riotous laughter. The two insisted that their friendship will not be affect by their award rivalry. Usually the female awards contention comes across fiercer because of the media’s tendency to sensationalize it. Actually, the relationship between actresses during work is cordial. When asked about the reported rivalry between Bernice and Fala, Steven insisted that he does not know the ins and outs of their relationship; and that he is friends to both. Wayne said if there were enmity between them, then they would not have been able to perform together. Steps’ rating in Hong Kong was quite respectable and Steven confirmed that the producers have intention to do a sequel, but it will be a totally different story.
Previously, the Hong Kong tabloids have reported on Steven’s heart problem. But Steven chided the tabloids for sensationalizing his health. Although his heart beats are abnormally high, his health is not as dire as reported; it’s just a minor affliction. Rather, he is more worried about his right eye which was hurt during the filming of “The Change of Destiny” last year. Even after a year’s lapse, and his sight is not affected, but when night comes around, that eye will ‘sink’. One eye will look ‘sunken’, while the other, ‘protruding’, giving him the look of having a pair of ‘big small eyes’.
