my mom was really confused by this movie too and gave up halfway. it's like outward multiple personality disorder. he sees people's personalities broken down. it's like an extreme version of the angel and devil on people's shoulders. so, with lam ka tung he has seven of these little things. one person who's afraid of everything, the boss, the hothead. etc. lau ching wan's wife is actually HIS inner demon!
