Over here in UK and indeed everywhere else apart from US and Australia, soccer is known as football. I know you Americans have your own "football" but why is THAT called football when you mostly use your arms and hands to play but proper football (which actually uses your feet to play) is called soccer instead?

I could even understand the Australians calling their homegrown sport "football" cos they do actually use their feet to play as well as their hands. But I really don't understand the logic behind calling American football - "foot-ball" - when in fact you rarely use your feet to play the game (obviously apart from using them for running and the very ocassional kick).

Our proper football Is by the very nature of it's name foot-ball. When the ball is in play, you only use your feet (and occasionally your head) to play and will be penalised for using your hands.
