Malaysian singer Leong Chui Peng, better known as Fish Leong, has been nominated as one of the finalists for the 2007 Outstanding Young Malaysians (TOYM) Award.
The 29-year-old Kuala Pilah-born songbird, who has a strong following in many parts of Asia for her Mandarin pop songs, began her singing career in Taiwan. She was nominated in the cultural achievement category.
Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Liow Tiong Lai announced the names of the finalists here today.
TOYM chief organizing chairman Low Kai Meng said 10 winners in various fields including academic leadership; business or entrepreneurial development; contribution to children, world peace and human rights; humanitarian and voluntary service; medical innovation; moral and religious leadership; scientific and technological development; political, legal and governmental affairs; and personal development and accomplishment would be announced on Dec 18.
TOYM is an annual event organized by the Junior Chamber International Malaysia (JCIM) since 1985 for outstanding Malaysians between 18 and 40 years old.
It is also the Malaysian leg of The Outstanding Young Persons (TOYP) of the World Program.
To date, seven Malaysians, including acclaimed actress Datuk Michelle Yeoh, had won the internationally-recognized TOYP awards.
