Something to think over
Where is that one dollar ???
try this riddle
Three friends went to a hotel.
The bill was 75 $
Each one contributed 25 $
The waiter took the bill to the
Cashier.
The cashier was happy & decided
To give them a discount of 5 $ & asked the waiter to return
them 5 $ .
Now the waiter was confused.
How to distribute 5 $ among 3 persons?
He kept 2 $ in his pocket &
Gave one dollar to each one of the 3 persons.
So initially each one had contributed
25 $ . Now as they are given 1 dollar back, their contribution
reduces to 24 $ .
They all contributed 24 $ --
That is 24x3=72 & 2 dollar are in the waiters pocket.
The total becomes 74. But they
Had paid 75 $ .
Where is the remaining 1 dollar???

It really should should be they each paid 24$ which makes its $72
Waiter kept 2$ which really makes it 70$ for the bartender.
Good misdirection there....

As Aquamartian point out... An easy way to look at this is to consider the cashier. Each patron pays $24 so there should be $72 total. The bill is $70 so the cashier takes $70. The remaining $2 is tips for the waiter.

I don't know if I can explain it any more clearly, heh...
The contradiction is between "They all contributed 24 $ -- That is 24x3=72" and "But they Had paid 75 $ ."
The first statement is true, the second is false. The extra $2 from the $72 paid on the $70 bill is in the waiter's pocket.

Once the cashier gave the three a $5 discount, the bill was no longer $75. Instead of having one dollar missing, there were two extra dollars.

this is quite a good way to teach maths in primary school actually..
good riddle anyway =p
the hint is don't forget the three persons had been given $5 discount, so total fee is 70, (24X3 = 72 - 2 = 70)
