Do you think playing a musical instrument helps you appreciate music more than someone who does not?
I started playing guitar 10 years ago and it has opened my eyes to new types of music created by some very talented musicians.
On the other side of the coin, I think a lot of the pop music you hear on the radio is neither creative nor very well written.

not necessarily... my dad never had the chance to learn an instrument but he has an entire room filled with CD's from all genres. He also knows more famous classical performers and conductors than I do, and I play two instruments plus voice.

I think so. I found by learning musical instruments, vocal, or even just theory would help to appreciate and understanding music, esp. classical music.

i think it does.
after playing and having to go through all the time to learn how to play from the very beginning to now i know how much practice and dedication is needed to put it all together to make music.
i know after i started playing and learning more, i also listen into the music. kind of like analyzing English passages

It really does. The fact that you know how much effort goes into producing good music is more than enough to make you appreciate musicians. As well, having a background in music helps when you listen, as you can more easily pick out the harmonies and the complexity of the piece of music. : )

Exactly what I wanted to say.
I can't be grateful enough for my parents forcing me to play the piano; even though it was tough, but now it's a pleasure to be able to play/compose music.
