Gameboy versus DS?

My soon to be 7-year-old son wants a Nintendo DS for his birthday! I know what this is but how does it differ from a gameboy? Can the same games be played on both and which would be ideal for him at his age?

ok, the ds and the gameboy are good.... but the PSP is so much better, i'd say that the ds and gb are old and cheap. but a psp, it wont die out in a month or 2 and it is superb to all other handhelds. tho it is a little more expensive. but it has much more entriging games. u can watch movies on it, use it as a controller on a ps2 and u can browse the web and use it as an mp3 player as well

i think that the psp is better as well. The ds is fun, but you cant really do other stuff with it.
