PS3 Problem?

My husband bought a PS3 a few months ago, and he went to put in a rented game, Oblivion, into the slot. He played it the day before but this time it wouldn't slide in, and it started making this crunching sound. I called Sony because I thought our daughter maybe put something in, and they said they don't repair them and it will cost 150 to return the system. I found a computer repair shop who took it apart, and found nothing inside, and he said to try a different disc, we did, and still the same thing. Anybody have this problem? Or does anyone have something to say that might be the problem? Please give me your ideas or whats happened with you. Thank you in advance.
