I won't let a child aged 5 play Grand Theft Auto, it is too violent.
There are many nice car race games out there (one based on the movie "The Cars"), but I don't own them, so I can't give you a serious review. I think my stepson likes one that is called "need for speed" or similar (but he is 13, so maybe it is not suitable for your 5years old son)
One completly different game: I found LocoRoco really nice. My daughter (10y) shared it with me, it was addictive for both of us. It looks like a "child game" but if you start you can't stop. The game music is good, it is easy to start (you haven't know many commands) but it get's difficult in higher levels. It's one of these games where children and adults have the same chances for the highscore and none get's bored or frustrated.
