Japan: tips on what to bring?
this is not going to help alot but hopefully its useful
I went there a few months ago and I here are some tips through my knowledge that you should bring...
- lots of water bottles (japan is located on an island, water there are highly expensive about $5USA for a 355ml bottle.)
- cash
- rechargable batterys w/ conversion adapter
- Reactine incase you get seafood allergy
- Alcaselzer incase you have a bad stomach pain or ache
- water proof digital watch w/ 2 world times...
that is about it. last time i went i forgot to bring a water proof digital watch and every time i go out to tokyo, i didnt know what time it was in japan

i am living in japan to teach now. things are actually reasonable as long as you don't buy everything from the big department stores or go to really nice restaurants everyday.
$5 for water?? most vending machines are only about $1.50. even evian and volvic are only about $2 for a liter.

I agree w/asianbanana. It really depends on what you want to get and where. Of course big department stores and high class restaurants will leave a hole in your wallet but there are reasonable places to eat and shop around too so really depends on where and the location i think. I have not been to the biggest city yet in Japan. I recently came back from Fukuoka which is a very memorable experience. Hope this helps.

There's only 2 very important thing to remember to bring
1) Cash
2) Credit cards
If you don't have both, you're in for a difficult trip.

my friend and i was planning a triip to japan one summer probably senior. but to bring bottled water?
i think that might be to much. even if it's expensive. it would be weird if they decide to search our bags and see boxes of water

You don't need to bring bottled water. There are konbini (convenience stores) and jidouhanbaigi (vending machines) everywhere you look. They're the normal price for a vending machine water. Also, there are always a ton of inexpensive drinks at the konbini, which are open 24/7.
I would suggest either bringing a hankerchief or purchasing one there. It's common to see adults using them to wipe the sweat off their face and neck.
Also, do not bring traveler's checks. They're useless except in an emergency when all your cash and credit cards are lost/stolen. Always carry a lot of cash with you, as it's a very cash-dependent country.
