Is it safe to buy a regular Xbox 360 now?

I want to get an Xbox 360, but unfortunately I've been reading about the Red Rings of death...

I need to know if it's safe to buy a 360 now, and please don't start recommending me PS3's, I hate them anyway.

If an Xbox 360 Elite will work better and won't get the rings, tell me.

if you just looking for gaming, then just get 360 premium and now only 280. if you want bigger hard drive then just elite. Both of them are fine.
