How do i messenge from yahoo to a mobile phone?

I'm having trouble can anyone help? I have that yahoo messenger beta thing and i want to write to people on their cell phone. What do i need to do to get it to work? All i've been doing is just writing the phone number down. Do i have to write anything else after it??? Help me please.
